Kevin Mitnick, "America 's Most Wanted Computer Outlaw," eluded the police, US Marshalls, and FBI for over two years after vanishing while on probation for his 1989 conviction for computer and access device fraud. His downfall was his Christmas 1994 break-in to Tsutomu Shimomura's computers in San Diego , California . Less than two months later, Tsutomu had tracked him down after a cross-country electronic pursuit. Mitnick was arrested by the FBI in Raleigh , North Carolina , on February 15th, 1995 charged with stealing 20,000 credit card numbers.
After pleading guilty to 7 charges at his trial in March 1999, he’s eventually sentenced to little more than the time he had already served while he awaited a trial.
Russian crackers siphon $10 million from Citibank and transfer the money to bank accounts around the world .Vladimir Levin, the 30 year old ringleader, uses his work laptop. Levin stands trial in the US and is sentenced to 3 years in prison. Authorities recover not all but $400 K of the stolen money.
